Korvosa has long stood as the first bastion of civilization on the wild frontier of Varisia, yet tragedy seems to haunt the city’s royal bloodline. Few of her rulers rule for long, and none have lived to a ripe old age, dying instead well before their time. Heirs to the throne are few and far between—in its 300-year history, no king of Korvosa has directly inherited the Crimson Throne from his father. This is the source of much gossip and tale-spinning among the city’s citizens, who speak in hushed tones of what they have come to call the Curse of the Crimson Throne. The latest ruler of Korvosa holds onto the throne with a tenuous grip. King Eodred Arabasti II has grown gravely ill over the past seven weeks and the populace of Korvosa grows increasingly nervous over the succession of the throne. Nobles are worried that Queen Illeosa is no more than a trophy wife and ill-suited to ascend the throne; the commoners whisper that she has no love for the city and worry what her rulership will bring to the streets.
Against this backdrop of rising tensions and political intrigue, four adventurers are drawn together by a mysterious summons from a Varisian fortune-teller, bound by their ties to a underworld criminal and their desires for revenge for the wrongs he’s inflicted on their lives. Their quest for vengeance will set them on a path that will spell disaster or glory for Korvosa.
